Way back in the days of the first CD-ROM software releases, one of the big crazes was for enhanced versions of existing books, such as encyclopedias with added video or classic novels with study notes. Often this was little more than a gimmick, but sometimes it offered a genuine improvement to the reading experience. The Islam software certainly falls into the latter category, and it does so with one of the oldest texts going.

The software is based on the Qur'an, the key text of the Islamic faith, but offers a truly comprehensive package. For example, it includes both the original text, including translation into 43 languages. There are two different translations into English, which may seem confusing, but also reveals some of the subtleties of interpretation that create ongoing debate. You can view up to four translations at the same time, which could have some study uses.

The package also contains the entire text as audio files in the original Arabic. They are in mp3 format for easy transfer to a portable music player, though the software can play them directly without needing an external application. Finally there is a comprehensive list and explanation of the variations on the expressions Muslim followers use when speaking the name of Allah.

The multimedia may not be technically stunning, but it's a very comprehensive package that enhances the original text.

Pro's: Improves the experience of studying the Qu'ran; low demand on PC resources

Con's: User interface is functional but not particularly attractive
